About Us
HISTORY
The center started in 2007 with approximately ten students from Milkwood Primary, a local school. We had 4 wooden optimist that leaked so badly we had to line them with motor vehicle rubber lining. These boats were unfortunately not suitable for competing in regattas but could be used for training.
We were able to borrow boats for competing and in 2008 our sailing students took part in their first National Championship. The center grew in both number and strength from this point on. Today we boast with approximately 100 sailing students! The majority of our students are from local schools in vulnerable areas. Sailing gives them a sense of responsibility and teaches them skills that would otherwise not be made available to them.
In 2011 the center received International Training status and all our instructors qualified as internationally recognized senior instructors. The Head of our center is a Senior Instructor and an Instructor Developer who is completely dedicated to training the students both in sailing and life skills which will equip them to be successful in their futures. Since the center started we have trained an additional 4 instructors who have taken the opportunity to travel abroad and coach internationally.
We are now the proud owners of 20 boats ranging from small dinghies to 18ft catamarans and we recently received a donation of 2 boats equipped for disabled sailors. This is extremely exciting as it means we can reach even more potential sailors. There are no limits where there is a passion to make others lives better.
The high level of training presented by our center has equipped several of our students with international standard sailing skills. This prepared them for national competitions which lead to their participation in 30 World Championships over the years.
